Relationships are not the easiest things to navigate at times or for long durations of time. Coupling is a dynamic which can introduce all types of twists and turns and sometimes places each or both individuals questioning the healthiness of their relationship.
Understanding each other and ourselves in this dynamic is a key factor to relational understanding. My belief in the purpose of couples therapy is not the ultimate goal of keeping the couple together but to assist the couple to explore their own needs and challenge each person to come to the conclusion to determine the worth both within and outside the couple’s dynamic.
Being married since 2003 has given me a perspective in the struggles of assimilation to such a lifestyle. Along with my clinical experience, it has “helped me help couples help themselves”.
It can be an uncomfortable and anxiety-provoking experience and having the right facilitator in this process is important for the most productive and healthy outcome.
